Excerpt form a letter by a prisoner at Kettle Moraine correctional, sent on 8/6/18:
“I’ve never seen a time when officers made a conscious decision to create as much hostility and hate, confusion and discomfort as I see here. In 2018 we still have almost no minority officers, and the ones they hire leave asap because they make them so uncomfortable most here are trying to leave, everyone is trying to transfer to Sturtevant Correctional. Inmate and officer. Guys about to kill each other are denied their request regularly. You have inmates claiming PREA [Prison Rape Elimination Act] here against officers and it falls of deaf ears. One inmate was assaulted by the Doctor and they told him he can not contact law enforcement…Many inmates have PTSD from sexual assaults and the institution still allows the officer do do these job duties, but the inmate suffers night sweats and night mares, flashbacks and depression as a result.
Dear voices brothers and sisters for an update on a letter I wrote regarding the unbearable conditions at the Kettle Moraine Correctional institution. One of the subjects I wrote about has been resolved with the officer being arrested for sexual assault of an inmate. I can also report that the results of his behavior have yet to have been seen.
I’m talking to inmates who suffered serious mental and physical damage as a result of the “reckless” disregard by this facility. Many, many, many inmates had made complaints regarding the harassment of this officer and assaults. So please I’m requesting that this institution be investigated by way of the news media requesting interviews with the hundreds of officers who resigned or were released by the department of corrections. The system they have created has been designed to create murders.”
Conditions in the Wisconsin prison system need to change.
